Day 3 – How much energy by type does the average NJ household use and the costs

The approximate average annual household energy use :

8,500 kWh of electricity costing $1,400 and emitting 4,500 pounds of CO2

1,000 therms of natural gas costing $1,000 emitting 11,300 pounds of CO2

1,000 gallons of gasoline costing $2,300 and emitting 19,600 pounds of CO2

Energy tip: There are two ways to start implementing energy efficiency recommendations from an energy audit report:

  1. Do all the options and recommendations at one time called a whole building approach.  This has the highest initial costs but also the highest energy saving and avoided environmental impacts. See NJBPU Clean Energy Program https://njcleanenergy.com/residential/programs/home-performance-energy-star/home-performance-energy-star-r
  2. Do the no cost and low-cost recommendations first and use the accumulated saving to pay for the largest recommendations and costs.  This has the lowest cost and longer time to implement.
