Day 2 – How much energy do we use in New Jersey and its costs?

New Jersey’s total energy use is 2,241 trillion Btus/ year, ranking 15th in the US.  

On average each person uses 252 million Btus/year, ranking 36th in the US.

One gallon of gasoline is about 120,000 Btus, one therm of natural gas is 100,000 Btus and 1 kWh of electricity is 3,412 Btus.  

New Jersey’s annual energy uses (2018 approximate):

75 billion kWh of electricity at a cost $10 billion emitting 18 million metric tons (MT) of CO2 (includes natural gas used to generate electricity)

8 billion therms of natural gas at a cost $5 billion emitting 26 million MT CO2 emissions.  Natural gas heating accounts for 78% of the market, with 12% electric and the rest oil (7%) and propane (3%). 

4.8 billion gallons of motor fuel at a cost of $12 billion emitting 40 million MT of CO2 emissions

Of the total energy use 26% in the residential sector, 26% in commercial, 12% by industry and 36% in transportation.

New Jerseyans spend $33 billion annually for their energy, ranking us 12th in the US.

On average each person in New Jersey spends $3,709 per year on energy cost, ranking us 34th in the US.
