Transportation and Electric Vehicles (EV)

Transportation accounts for almost 50% of New Jersey’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.  The most effective way to save energy and reduce GHG emissions is in the transportation sector and the most efficient way to do that is with an EV.

A typical internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle owner will drive about 14,000 miles per year.  At 25 mpg they would use about 560 gallons of gasoline per year or about 65,000,000 Btus of energy at a cost of about $1,200 per year.

A typical EV uses 0.3 kWh per mile.  The EV would use about 4,200 kWh to drive 14,000 miles per year or about 14,000,000 Btus at a cost of about $715 per year.

A gallon of gasoline releases 20 pounds of CO2.  560 gallon of gasoline releases 11,200 pound of CO2 per year.

A kWh in New Jersey releases 0.54 pounds of CO2.  4,200 kWh of electricity releases 2,270 pounds of CO2.

Basically, an ICE vehicle converts about 20% of its energy in the tank to motion of the vehicle. The EV converts about 60% of its energy in the battery to motion of the vehicle.
